Dry eye is a chronic medical condition that develops when the eye's tear film does not lubricate and protect the eye's outer surface.
Michael F. Chiang, MD, has been named as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Eye Institute (NEI). Dr. Chiang is currently the Knowles Professor of Ophthalmology & Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and is associate director of the OHSU Casey Eye Institute. He specializes in telemedicine and artificial intelligence for the diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity and other ophthalmic diseases
Dr. Chiang is a former RPB Career Development Award (CDA) recipient, and has served as a mentor for two more recent RPB grantees—an RPB Medical Student Eye Research Fellowship and an RPB CDA. He is featured in an article on the 30th anniversary of RPB’s CDA grant. Dr. Chiang has also served as a reviewer for other RPB grants.
